Biography
Winifred Hodge has been painting in the Yorkshire Dales for the past 20 years.
The experience of growing up on a farm in Galloway in south west Scotland with its gentle rolling hills and lovely coastline, then in the beautiful Yorkshire dales has provided much inspiration for her work all her life.
Dedication to and celebration of the environment is intrinsic to her art and subject matter is seen through the eyes of an artist with a deep and rich understanding of natural history and ecology. The experience of seeing the work of many fine Scottish artists from an early age both with her parents, at school in Edinburgh and at college in London, has also had a considerable influence on her work over the years.
Her subjects are all very familiar, much loved places and the resulting works are not in any real sense, topographical landscapes but from the detailed sketches and notes done on the spot, the painting develops into an image that becomes alive with energy and atmosphere, capturing some of her joy of being in the great outdoors.
