Winifred Hodge was born in Galloway, south-west Scotland and moved to Wensleydale in 1990. Enjoying the great outdoors of the dales has made her acutely aware of the rhythms of nature and the wonderful effects of ever changing light on the landscape. The low sun of the winter months, the richness of colour as the sun rises and sets on wild, bleak and rugged moorland or on the seas around the Hebrides and North West coast of Scotland are her main sources of inspiration.
Trying to capture on paper or canvas an image that in a simple statement encompasses that sense of awe and wonder, provides a powerful and exciting challenge in all her work. Using bold, clear colours to generate energy and intensity her aim is to persuade the viewer not to simply view the landscape but to experience it intimately. Having been primarily a painter in watercolour for many years, more recently Winifred now responds to an initial fascination with textiles and works in acrylics, oils, inks and gouache to create greater depth, line and texture within her work.
Winifred runs classes weekly from September to March in Carperby in the Yorkshire Dales and in the summer months runs 2/3 day workshops both in her studio in Redmire and other venues both in the UKand abroad.
